Home Blending Black Tea

The fun with tea does not limited to only pure tea and it does not end with it as well, it’s fun to play with own blending.

This is the blending of using black tea from different regions in the world, with dried orange peel and a pinch of lavender

The flavor is similar to Earl Grey except there is no trace of aromatic additives or essential oil. Can enjoy its harmony taste without sugar and/or milk.

Hubei Golden Tippy Gongfu Black Tea

There is an amazing world for us to explore with tea.

Hubei is the birthplace of my biological parents, even though I haven’t have the opportunity to visit there but now I have this amazing organic quality Golden Tippy Gongfu Black Tea from the Ming Chien (明前) harvest in my collection that allow my spirit sour as if I can touch the beautiful nature every time I brew this tea.

The region is on the high mountain range above 1300 meter, fresh leaves were picked right after the cold winter, therefore not only the dried leaves look very pretty with excessive golden hair coverage, but also with amazing fine flavor and taste.

I wish I can send this fine flavor and taste to you via internet, but don’t worry,  you are in my heart when enjoyed the brewing.

Full body of flavor

Fine taste without single trace of bitterness

Pu’erh – My cup of tea

Tasting you

What a joyful reunion of two old friends

even though it wasn’t long ago

but each time it’s like two old friends who met after a long time

Each reunion is such wonderful moment with joyful tear and heart full emotion

Such passion that can neither be described with words nor be melted even with ice from the North Pole.

Tasting you

It is like listening to the charm that hangs on the horse neck

It guides me to the ancient tea route with the sound of clink, clink, clink

Every step we move forwards, a new path is opened before us that has no end.

Old friend

even though you are far from the South, at the edge of cloud,

and yet you are so close to my heart

Silently you emerge with the beautiful harmony in Nature

Silently you enrich the healthy living, bring us joy

and guard us through the wisdom of Confucian, Taoism and Buddhism

It doesn’t matter which comes first, tea or people, just because you are already here.

Old friend,

With you, there are so many amazing stories and secrets of ancient tribes to tell

With you, we taste the harmony melody of heaven, earth and human, we realize the virtue of keeping head down

Time passed by without a trace

you have turned, turned, turned around for  thousands of year

and yet are still turning

You have been through many storms and changes

You have witnessed many turmoil and chaos

You stand straight quietly, do your best to survive and hope we can listen

You shed so many tear for human errors, your voice has not been heard and yet we fail to listen

Puerh Tea

One ancient Chinese name

It brings the gentle breeze and the whisper from the Nature

One big leaf that has many legends and surprises

One big leaf that has varied flavor and taste that transformed in time

My heart is touched by the natural wisdom

Every cup opens a door for a new journey

A true friend that enlightens my day in the darkness, warms up my heart in the coldness

Its warmth frees my mind and its wisdom whispers to my soul

It’s my cup of tea

It’s Pu’erh

Wu Long or Oolong

The pinyin for 烏龍 in English can be either Wu Long or Oolong. But in Chinese there is one spelling that is 烏龍 and if you used the standard hàn yǔ pīn yīn, you will get wū lóng.

If you really want to know why there is a Pin Yin difference in English, then probably you should try to study the history of how the earliest Thomas Francis Wade, a British diplomat and sinologist, who produced the first Chinese textbook in English in 1867, which has further been amended, extended and converted into the Wade-Giles romanization system for Mandarin Chinese by Herbert Giles in 1892. The Wade–Giles Pin Yin is still used in Taiwan The Hanyu pinyin system that commonly used today was approved in Mainland China in 1958.

For foreigners who want to learn Chinese might come across with the English spelling either from the earlier Wad-Giles pinyin or from the modern Hanyu pinyin. There is no need to argue which pinyin in English is more correct, the critical point is can you make the spelling correctly in Chinese that Chinese people can understand.
It does not matter which pinyin you use in English, either Oolong or Wu Long, these all meant for one thing, 烏龍 (wū lóng) in Chinese. No matter what “Dark Dragon” is a wrong translation ^_^.

When you learn tea, you will and have to learn Chinese; intonation isn’t that difficult if you could sing.
There are some confusing English pinyin for same type of tea in Chinese.  With tea we learn the essence of purity and authenticity, so I personally like to keep the Chinese spelling.   For example, Feng Huang Dan Cong 鳳凰單叢 remains as Feng Huang Dan Cong unless the mountain region is named by the China government as “Pheonix Mountain”.

For the same thing, Lung Jing 龍井 should remain as Lung Jing; if you use the English pinyin as Dragon Well, then how are you going to translate the best water for Lung Jing in Hangzhou, hǔ pào quán ? to “Tiger takes a bath in fountain”? It would be very weird to translate the sentence of brewing Lung Jing with the water from hǔ pào quán to “Brewing Dragon Well with the water from Tiger takes a bath in fountain“, right?

Don’t worry and be happy. Have a cup of tea.

Cherry Loose leaf Tea

Hand picked & made Cherry Loose Leaf Tea from the Spring plucks.

There are many different kinds of cherry blossom tree (Zakura) and Yaezakura is the only one that we can consume its flowers and leaves.

These Yaezakura trees have already been cultivated more than 10 years. It is pesticide-free herbal tea, because no pesticide is needed for cherry blossom trees.

Cherry Leaf Tea has various benefits to health:

  1. Prevention against cancer due to the antioxidant components
  2. Help to lower risk of blood pressure and bad cholesterol, to lower the risk for cardiovascular problems.
  3. Potentially contribute to the detoxification process in body
  4. Help to balance pH by lowering uric acid levels in body

Cherry leaf tea does provide many health benefits as other types of tea but do consider it as a healthy herbal tea and shouldn’t exaggerate its medicinal benefits. Always check with your doctor if having any health problem.

Why batanical tea garden is unique

Here are some information about the organic quality traditional Oolong from the batanical tea garden from KP:
  1. Self made natural fertilizer – he creates the fertilizer himself by using natural ingredients
  2. He only picks tea once a year, so tea trees could have sufficient resting to regain their energy
  3. The tea garden is situated on high mountain altitude which is surrounded by forests
  4. KP extremely respects to the harmony balance with the Nature
  5. The tea garden is absolutely chemical- and pesticide-free
  6. In order to teach the local villagers to pick tea according to what he wants, 1 young with 1-2 leaf, he ensures the daily income of these tea pickers instead of paying them by kg.

KP is devoted to the harmony balance with the Nature.  When I asked him what is his motivation to start the batanical tea garden to produce pure organic quality tea? His answer was very simple,
he wants and he drinks only clean and pure quality tea.
KP and I both have passion to preserve the traditional wisdom and techniques.  Often people asked us why the traditional fermented/roasted processed Oolong? Simple, because
it is more gentle to the stomach and it tastes good.

Because KP only picks once a year in the spring time, therefore, the annual outputs are very limited.  For example, the output for Mei Zhan Oolong was less than 15 kgs in 2017 because of the warm winter.

A sleeping beauty is awakened

Often people asked me the question of how long can they store the tea, here is one example of a pack Jade Oolong that I have stored it more than 15 years.
When it’s young and fresh, this Jade Oolong charms you with refreshing and sexy flora flavor as a young and beautiful girl.  After the beauty being slept for 15 years , the original young and sexy flavor has calmed down. But once it’s being lightly roasted and awakened in warm water, the flavor is once again flourished.
Instead of young and refreshing flavor, it surprises you with charming combination of smooth flora and sweet nuts flavors. The taste is soft and smooth with long lasting after taste.
No automatic alt text available.
Well processed Oolong can also be stored for long time with the following basic requirements:
  1. The quality of tea base is very important
  2. The tea base must be well processed (often lightly fermented and not well processed Oolong could have problem)
  3. Appropriate storing conditions and environment are critical

2008 Bu Lang Sheng Pu’erh

Under the greyish sky, it’s time to enjoy the calm and ease energy.  After a bowl of noddle, I said to myself that I need to have a cup of tea to stimulate the digestion. The fine image of Bada mountain and ZhangLang cottages that mentioned in the earlier blog still hanging in my memory.  So my mind was set for Pu’erh.

Instead of young Sheng Pu’erh, it’s time for old tea; instead of opening another dialogue page in mind, I chose the Sheng Pu’erh from ZhangLang made by Bu Lang tribe of 2008.

2008 Bu Lang Sheng Pu’erh

After so many years, can easily divide leaves from the cake.

It’s hard to describe that joyful feeling when smelling that mixture of refreshing fruity, betel nuts, mos and grassy notes; the only thought was “Yes, Yes, Yes”.

What I love about Sheng Pu’erh from Zhanglang made by Bu Lang tribe is when you first drink it, the taste was soft and smooth, but the mouth is quickly full with the astringent after taste and the after taste last long.

When brewing this 8 years old Sheng Pu’erh made from >100 years old tea tree with wood-fired ceramic tea ware, it’s like enjoying a dialogue that combine wisdom of five elements between two zen monks. The dialogue without speaking, simply enjoy peace and tranquillity in a moment of silence.

2017 Pu’erh (Sheng)

2017 Pu’erh tea is available. The market for Pu’erh this spring again is tricky, because the quantity is less due to the insufficient rain and frost. Luckily the weather showed her mercy before, during and after leaves were picked.

Expecting the price marks high this year, but I believe the quality is  interesting that worth for collection.

A no-so-good quality Pu’erh won’t become good-to-better quality pu’erh by the aging process through years of storage. It’s better to invest on good-to-better quality to have a reasonable stone to make a snow ball in the future.

Growing old together Pu’erh is fun and inspiring.

BaDa/ZhangLang Sheng Pu’erh

Region:

Tea cake is made from tea leaves from Zhanglang cottage and BaDa mountain region.  The average age of tea tree: >100 years old.

BaDa Mountain is one of the most
concentrated areas of ancient tea tree resources in Xishuangbanna, and there are more than 6,000 mu of original ancient tea tree.  Zhanglang is the largest family stockade of BuLang tribe.  The altitude is about 1750meters where have not only very rich resource for Puerh tea production, but also the cultural heritage is also obsessed by many people who appreciate tea and nature.

Flavour & Taste

BuLang Pu’er tea is known for its steady atmosphere, delicated flavor from the tea liquid. The taste is somewhat watery soft and smooth with slight bitter astringent taste; the after taste comes slowly in mouth but full of stamina that chants in your mind with its memorable flavor and taste.

Picking date: around 29/3/2017

Net weight: 200grams

In general, this year the region has ess rain after the Chinese New Year and the frost afterwards caused drops of fresh young leaves.  The quantity has drops about 40% but the demands are increased therefore the whole sales price increases more than double than last year. Even though the price is slightly higher this year, but the quality is worth for collection.
